CHURCH APPOINTS MODERATOR DESIGNATE
The United Free Church of Scotland is pleased to announce that the Moderator Designate of our 2018 General Assembly will be Mr John P. Cross, Session Clerk of Murrayfield UF Church, Bannockburn.
Mr Cross is a retired schoolteacher who taught History for 8 years at Queens Park Secondary School in Glasgow, before moving to teach Religious and Moral Education and Philosophy from 1984-2015 at Graeme High School in Falkirk, where he was principal teacher for 19 of those years.
He was born in the Angel Room in Overton House, Dumbarton, and brought up on the south side of Glasgow, attending Hutchesons’ Grammar School, Glasgow University (where he gained an MA Honours in History), and Jordanhill Teacher Training College.
He was ordained as an elder in Croftfoot United Free Church in 1975 and moved to Darnley United Free Church when he married in 1981. When his wife, Jan, was called to be minister of Murrayfield UF Church in 1983, they moved to Bannockburn, where they had a daughter (Jenny) and two sons (Andrew and David).
Although ill health led to Jan stepping down from active ministry in 2001, they continue to live and worship in Bannockburn. In addition to holding the post of Session Clerk, Mr Cross attempts to encourage links with the local community by organising regular acoustic concert evenings and compering quiz nights. He is currently convener of the denomination’s Youth Committee.
Retirement has given him more time to read, travel, and listen to music. He is a member of Stirling Folk Club and an active participant in Forth Valley Walking Football groups.
He is looking forward to the new challenges that this role will bring.
The Assembly will meet in Perth from 6th – 8th June 2018.
